Pioneering Begins

July 20, 2008

Pioneering Begins in

Toril Davao City

"For the Son of man has come to seek and to save that which was lost."

Luke 19:10

Praise the LORD for He is good and His mercy endures forever! This is true my friends and when we step out in faith like Abraham, Moses and the prophets we really learn this through our dependence on the LORD. When we surrender our lives to God and follow His will denying ourselves our wants and desires, and joyfully choose to live for and serve God He guides us by His Holy Spirit and leads us to places we could never imagine or dream of going to! We have seen some awesome changes in our lives here these past couple weeks. Where do I begin...

I've been going to the mountains every Tuesday to learn vegetable growing practices with 100 Filipino farmers from different communities. This gives me a chance to practice speaking Cebuano the local dialect, I have a language teachers Ate Bebe who comes to teach me for one hour every week and I'm now on lesson 13 of 60. My helper Jerry and I've been learning lots of useful farming techniques. The lecturer Celes from "Harbest Seeds" happens to live 2 kilometers away from us and has agreed to help us with our vegetable gardens. We plan to use agriculture as one of the means of making our ministry self-sustainable.

We have been working diligently on organizing ourselves to operate as a legal entity here and this week I will submit the registration papers to SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) for our NGO (non-government organization). We named our non-stock, non-profit incorporation "WELLOFLIFE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT INC." Our purpose is to reach the poorest of the poor and lead them into the Kingdom of God through practical holistic approaches (which I will explain later). We have a small manageable BOT (board of trustees) 5 people including Lydia and I. God has provided 3 other men of God to assist us with our vision. We have Pastor Casas, Kuya Rico a businessman (who's mother owns the compound we're renting), and Dominador "Sunday" who is the head of the soils laboratory for the Department of Agriculture and also is the chairman for a Foundation here offering assistance to the handicapped and disabled. God has linked us with Pastor Jun and his wife who are doing CHE (community health education) and has a school to provide free education in Muslim communities. They have agreed to partner with us and help to organize our community and help train our ministry team. God is so Great He even connected us with a Christian lawyer Atty. Tan who has been notarizing all my documents for free! This is a confirmation of God's blessing upon our lives, He takes care of His children in all areas.

We are now settled into our beautiful walled compound. This is a tremendous blessing from God as we now have 2 two-storey houses (1 is our house and office the other is our ministry house), we have gardens (to be constructed), a variety of bearing fruit trees, gorgeous flowers, a bird, dog, chickens, pool table, peaceful place to study and a needy community waiting for the Good News to confront them face to face! Our move was successful and we are setting up to evangelize this rural community. We have been busy cleaning up the place and doing repairs and setting up our garden area. All I can say is come to the Philippines and help us with the work the LORD has entrusted to us, the harvest is plentiful but the labourers are few...so come help us to reap the harvest.

We have a church in our community which we have attended "Four Square Gospel Church" they have given us a warm welcome and we rejoice to be in the household of faith with our brothers and sisters in the LORD!

Please pray for the rest of our team, for God to bring us those who He has hand picked to carry out the goals and objectives God gives us for winning the souls of those in this community. There are 21 sub communities in our community and we intend to reach them all by the anointing of Christ our Leader through home visitations etc.. Since the fruit of a missionary is more missionaries we intend to train up and send out teams to other communities in the future. We are in a farming community where much land is not being used to it's full potential and is perfect for vegetable gardening. We hope to see this community a model community for "Community Transformation." We intend to set up a demonstration farm 2 lots down which will be our training grounds for farming interns who want to learn organic farming.

So far we have one helper named Jerry, he is from Agdao the other community we worked in. Jerry is 21 and loves the LORD, we are training and discipling him to be able to start a work one day in whatever community that God chooses for him. He lives and works with us Monday to Friday, we release him Saturday and Sunday as he's on the worship team of our old church and needs to be at practice. We give him a weekly allowance and he wants to go to collage next semester pray that he saves his money. We will eventually need a full time book-keeper/secretary, a full time social worker, a helper for household duties and about 5 people for our ministry team who will help build the relationships in the community. As you can see we have a big vision, the Word of God teaches us that where there is no vision people will perish. We realize we are small, but are comforted by a Big God, who never sleeps nor slumbers, nothing is impossible with our Almighty God so we say lets do this LORD! We are His servants and it's our job to go to the lost because Jesus Christ lives in us and how will they hear the Gospel unless we bring it to them?

Lydia is doing fine now that she is taking an insulin needle every morning to regulate her blood sugar level. It's an adjusting period for the both of us as so much has happened in such a short time. However it's years of planning and praying becoming a reality, all of this just didn't just happen overnight and it's just the beginning of something great. This new place has become a real blessing to Lydia as she has been able to find the rest and peace she is needing to have, although I have to stop her sometimes as she wants to help with all the work needed to be done. We're praying for a helper a couple days a week to lighten the load of household duties as it's a big place and lots of upkeep. We're trying to get established and set up before our little guy comes into this world.

Prayer Points:

1. Good health for Lydia and the baby.

2. Registration of our NGO to be completed God speed.

3. Strength and finances to be able to set all our livelihood projects up at our compound.

4. Dedicated Christians to join our ministry team and reach our community.

5. Our ministry of intercession and Bible study to be a number one priority, as many organizations get too busy in ministry to include Jesus in their schedule.

We covet you prayers!

Thanks for all you do to make this mission possible.

Bless God,

Love,

Jeffrey & Lydia Smith

Praise the LORD for His Graces! Please Pray for Lydia and Our Baby!

Greetings in the name of Jesus our LORD, How are you doing? We are doing well by the graces of God.  Praise the LORD for His wonderful journey we call life.  We have been going through a lot of changes and we ask God's strength to get through them all, because without Christ we are week. Lydia has been diagnosed with gestational diabetes and has to take an insulin needle every morning, and be under regular monitoring (goes to the hospital every week).  We were told to make...

Stories from the Streets of Davao

Kamusta? (How are you?),

Well this has been a hard but also awesome last couple of weeks.  We Praise God for His abundant Mercy and sweet sweet Grace!

I will start with the difficult times here first...

Our Church has been really struggling through some issues and the end result is that our dear Pastors will say their farewell this Sunday.  Pastor Casas and his wife Ate Grace have been working with our Church for the past 5 months after we lost our last Pastor due to immorality issues last year.  We've seen great growth in the people in our congregation and we Praise God for their time with us.  Pray that God will bring a committed man of God to sheperd His flock and labor among us!  We will continue to work with pastor Casas and his wife as they are our close friends and fellow ministers.  We work with them in the mountains with their 10 Churches throughout Davao City.

The next difficult thing is rather bazaar.  I was ministering to a Chinese guy for the last 3 weeks who was detained in the Immigrations holding cell as he's an illegal alien.  He had been locked up there for 3 months prior to my visiting.  There was a Malaysian guy in there also, I was sharing the Gospel to them both.  I brought them donuts a couple books, and some toothpaste and soap.  The Chinese guy had a Bible and was hungry for me to explain it to him, and share real life stories about Christians with him.  He had a very hard growing up according to him and was just waiting to know Jesus.  So I had the wonderful privilege of leading him to the LORD and he did accept Jesus as his personal Savior.  I was rejoicing over this so much!  Then I just read in the paper he escaped from his cell last Sunday morning and is a wanted fugitive on the run here.  This was a very unexpected turn of events.  I'm so shocked and don't know what to say, the authorities are now conducting an investigation.  Please pray for this whole situation.

Now the good news...

Thank you all for your many blessings financially!  We were able to donate 10 Bibles to students doing a Bible training school here with Pastor Casas and Ate Grace.  The students are very thankful and I signed the books from Park Road Church.  I will be teaching the students farming in the upcoming weeks.

I started doing a free farming training in the mountains, it's every Tuesday and will be finished in August.  There is over 100 people attending from all over the city some come over 3 hours away, and I'm the only white guy.  It's put on by the Department of Agriculture and Harbest Seeds Inc., and food etc. is sponsored by a large mall here.  I saw a lady we work with in the mountain Ate Marilyn and we hung out all day.  I asked what she needed for her ministry in the mountains because she's a missionary too who lives in the mountain.  She said school supplies for the kids because some don't go to class if they don't have pencil or paper.  We bought supplies for 30 kids to give her on Tuesday.  Paper pads, pencils, Crayons, pencil sharpeners, coloured paper and yellow paper pads for tests.  She is teaching the children Bibles lessons every Wednesday and was requesting materials for this, I was able to purchase around 7 Sunday school teaching booklets for her and hope they will help.  Praise God we could do this...you made it possible!  I also was able to buy a printer today and printed Health Care teaching materials for her to teach in the remote villages with, they are very imformative materials to teach preventitive methods and how to treat common problems!!!!  I also met a Christian guy at the training who is interested in organic farming so I copied him some materials I've been putting together.  I've got a backpack full of stuff to bring to the mountain on Tuesday i can't wait!

Well if you made it this far in my novel you must really be interested so I saved the best for the last!

Today Lydia and I met with a Christian lady who owns a compound in a farming district of the city.  We had visited the property 2 weeks ago with her son to check the possibilities of us relocating there and renting her house.  We will do farming projects in the large open space there and also cultivate her sons land two lots down.  There is 2 houses in the compound the main having 2 bathrooms and 3 bedrooms and the other house I will see in this Wednesday.  The meeting went really well she like Lydia and I, and her other son was there that works for the Department of Agriculture and he is going to assist me on this project however I need in terms of seeds, resources and technical training.  The mom said she will let us use the two houses, which will be really good for hosting teams, retreats, farming interns or camps whatever we want to do!  Wow this is a huge answer to all our prayers!!!  Pray for God to give us favor in closing the deal, we are hoping to not pay anymore than we are currently paying.  This land is in an area where we can really minister to the local people and do community projects in.  This will also be a way for us to provide sustainable income for our mission!  We worship the LORD and see His Almighty hand working strongly in our lives!

"Every good and perfect gift is from above...."  James 1:17
God Bless you all!

Bless the LORD Jesus!
Love, Jeffrey & Lydia Smith

We're having a baby BOY!!!

We're pleased to inform you that God has blessed us with a baby boy (in the womb of Lydia).  Lydia had an ultra sound yesterday and it's a boy!  We rejoice!  Praise the LORD!   Thanks for all your amazing love toward this child and the seeds you've already sown into our childs life.  Salamat Kaayo!

There was 17 mothers at the Bible study I lead yesterday wonderful turn out!  I had my first Cebuano language lesson yesterday, it's 60 lessons and I will do one a week.  My teacher is a professional who doesn't advertise but prays to God for her students which a lot are missionaries, it's a one-on-one style of teaching.  One hour of teaching is one lesson and it costs $6.25, in total it will cost roughly $365 to learn to preach, teach, and speak the local tongue here.  If all goes according to plan I will be fluent in 1 year and 2 months roughly.  I'm very excited about this.

God Bless

Praise Report

Praise the LORD for His goodness!  We have arrived home and are back into the swing of things here in Davao.  We rejoice that God is doing great things in the hearts of His children here.  It was so nice to see many of our friends here, we have had 2 big dinner gathers at our house already...food and fellowship go hand in hand here. We have been very busy here cleaning and preparing our home for living in.  When I opened the door it was sealed by spider webs, good to know...

We are thankful for all your support and love to Lydia and I and now the coming baby! Lydia feels very much at home when at Park Road Church, she enjoys how our Church is one big family. The way she has been accepted in the family almost brings her to tears of joy, thanks again for all your love...
